Moses and the Sea

Bible passage: Exodus 13 and 14 · Ages 6 to 8 · Old Testament

Paraphrase Long ago, God’s people had to work very hard for a king who was not kind to them. They asked God for help.

Paraphrase God spoke to a man named Moses from a bush that glowed with fire. God said, I have seen how my people are treated. I will lead them out of that place.

Paraphrase Moses led the people out. They packed what they could carry and set out together, with children and animals.

Paraphrase Soon they came to a big sea. Behind them, soldiers were coming. In front of them, there was only water. The people were scared.

Paraphrase Moses said, Do not be afraid. Stand still and see what God will do. God made a strong wind blow all night.

Paraphrase In the morning there was dry ground right through the sea, like a path with walls of water on each side. The people walked across.

Paraphrase On the other side, everyone was safe. They sang and danced and thanked God.

From the Bible (King James Version)

Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD

Exodus 14:13 (KJV, excerpt)

Let us wonder

What do you think the people felt when they walked through the sea?

One small thing to do

Stand very still for ten seconds, then take a slow breath and say, Thank you, God.
