Telling a story with pictures

Ages 3 to 5 Read and do together · about 15 minutes

Read together

Every story has a start, a middle and an end.

What happens first? What happens next? How does it end?

Do it

  1. Fold a sheet of paper into three. Label the boxes 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Choose a simple story, such as a bird looking for a nest.
  3. Draw one picture in each box. Draw stick figures. That is fine.
  4. Tell the story out loud, pointing to each picture. Ask your child to tell it back to you.

Talk about it

For the grown-up

Retelling a story builds memory and the sense of order. Let your child change the ending, because making up stories is the point.

Little Way has stories from the Bible that you can tell this way.
