Letters I know
Read together
Letters are the shapes of sounds.
A is for apple. M is for moon.
Do it
- Start with the letters in your child's name. Say the letter, its name and its sound.
- Hunt for those letters on cereal boxes, signs and books.
- Make a letter from play dough or draw it large in the air.
- Add one or two letters each week. Say, “A, a, apple”.
Talk about it
- Which letters are in your name?
- Where can we spot an M?
For the grown-up
Knowing some letters and their sounds helps children start to read. Teach a few at a time, in play. There is no hurry.
