God’s Good Rules

Bible passage: Exodus 19 and 20 · Ages 6 to 8 · Old Testament

Paraphrase The people came to a great mountain, and they camped at the bottom. Moses climbed up to talk with God.

Paraphrase A cloud covered the top of the mountain. It was a very special place, and the people waited.

Paraphrase God gave Moses rules to help everyone live well. They are called the ten commandments.

Paraphrase The first ones are about loving God: put God first, and take a day to rest and remember him.

Paraphrase Others are about loving people: honour your parents, tell the truth, do not take what is not yours.

Paraphrase Good rules are like fences around a garden. They keep us safe and help us treat each other well.

Paraphrase Jesus later said that all the rules come down to two: love God, and love other people.

From the Bible (King James Version)

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV)

Let us wonder

Which good rule is hardest to keep? Why?

One small thing to do

Pick one good rule, and try your best to keep it all day.

Retold in simple words (a paraphrase), so it is not the Bible’s own text. The read-aloud voice is computer-made. Jesus is never shown with a face. Nothing you do here is saved or sent anywhere.
