Solomon Asks for Wisdom

Bible passage: 1 Kings 3 · Ages 6 to 8 · Old Testament

Paraphrase When David grew old, his son Solomon became king. Solomon was still young, and there was so much to learn.

Paraphrase One night God spoke to Solomon in a dream. God said, Ask for anything you want, and I will give it to you.

Paraphrase Solomon thought carefully. He could have asked for a big house or lots of gold or a long life.

Paraphrase But Solomon said, Please give me a wise heart, so that I can lead your people well and know right from wrong.

Paraphrase God was very happy. He said, You did not ask for riches. You asked for wisdom, so I will give you wisdom, and so much more.

Paraphrase Solomon became known as a wise king. People came from far away to ask him hard questions.

Paraphrase Solomon wrote many wise sayings, which are still in the Bible today.

From the Bible (King James Version)

Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart

1 Kings 3:9 (KJV, excerpt)

Let us wonder

If God said, Ask for anything, what would you ask for?

One small thing to do

Ask a grown-up for their best piece of advice.
