The Jar That Did Not Run Out

Bible passage: 1 Kings 17 · Ages 6 to 8 · Old Testament

Paraphrase There was a time when no rain fell, and food was running out. A woman and her little boy had almost nothing left.

Paraphrase She had only a little flour and a little oil, enough for one last small meal.

Paraphrase A traveller named Elijah, who followed God, came to her gate. Please, may I have something to eat?

Paraphrase Elijah said, Do not be afraid. God says your jar of flour and your jug of oil will not run out until the rain comes.

Paraphrase The woman trusted God, and she shared what she had. She made bread for Elijah, and for her son, and for herself.

Paraphrase And then something wonderful happened. Every day, there was still flour in the jar, and oil in the jug.

Paraphrase When the rain came at last, the family was still well fed. Sharing had made a big difference.

From the Bible (King James Version)

And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail

1 Kings 17:16 (KJV, excerpt)

Let us wonder

Why do you think the woman shared her last bit of food?

One small thing to do

Share something you like with someone who might not have any.
