David the Shepherd Boy

Bible passage: 1 Samuel 16 and 17; Psalm 23 · Ages 6 to 8 · Old Testament

Paraphrase David was a shepherd boy. He looked after his father’s sheep, and he sang songs to God as he walked.

Paraphrase He kept the sheep safe at night, because he cared about every one.

Paraphrase One day, a giant called Goliath stood on a hill. He was very, very tall, and the whole army was afraid.

Paraphrase David was only a boy, but he was not afraid. He said, God has always helped me, and God will help me now.

Paraphrase David chose five smooth stones from the stream, and he took his sling.

Paraphrase David trusted God. The giant fell down, and the people were safe. They cheered and cheered.

Paraphrase When David grew up he wrote songs. One of them says that God is like a good shepherd who looks after us.

From the Bible (King James Version)

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

Let us wonder

When have you felt brave, even though you were small?

One small thing to do

Say thank you to God for one thing that helps you feel brave.
