Read together

A map has pictures that stand for real places.

A key tells us what each picture means.

Do it

  1. Take a short walk near home. Notice places: a church, a shop, a park, a school, a road.
  2. At home, draw a simple map: your home in the middle, with paths to those places.
  3. Make symbols: a cross for the church, a tree for the park, a house for home. Draw a key.
  4. Walk the route on your map. Say “turn left”, “turn right”, “straight”.

Talk about it

For the grown-up

Maps use symbols and a key. Left and right take time to learn, so practise on real walks.
