Neighbours and cultures

Read together

People live in different places and have different ways of life. We call these ways culture.

Culture includes food, clothes, music, language, festivals and beliefs.

Jesus taught, “Do to others what you would like them to do to you” (a paraphrase of Matthew 7:12).

Do it

  1. Make a “culture circle” poster: draw yourself in the middle. Around it, draw things about your family culture: food, music, clothes, festivals, languages.
  2. Talk to a neighbour or friend from another background. Ask three kind questions about their favourite food, festival or song.
  3. Compare: what is the same? What is different? Write two things you have in common.
  4. Plan one way to welcome a new neighbour: a card, a greeting in their language, a shared snack.

Talk about it

For the grown-up

Learning about other cultures builds respect and curiosity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights begins by saying that all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The “Golden Rule” appears in many faiths and cultures.
