Coins and notes

Read together

Money is a way to trade. Coins and notes have values.

A bigger coin is not always worth more.

We can earn, save, spend and share.

Do it

  1. Look at the coins and notes in your country. Say each name and its value.
  2. Set up a pretend shop with five items with prices.
  3. Take turns being the shopper and the shopkeeper. Pay with the right coins and give change.
  4. Practise making the same amount two ways: for example, 10 with one coin, or with five 2s.

Talk about it

For the grown-up

Money lessons teach counting, adding and decisions. You can also talk about giving, such as putting some coins in a collection for someone in need. A later lesson, “Save, spend and give”, goes further.
