Writing a sentence

Ages 6 to 8 Read together, then try alone · about 15 minutes

Read together

A sentence tells a whole idea. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

“The dog runs.” That is a sentence. “The dog” is not, because we want to know what it does.

Every sentence needs someone or something, and what they do.

Do it

  1. Choose a picture or something you did today.
  2. Write one sentence about it. Check: capital letter? Space between words? Full stop?
  3. Write three more sentences about the same thing. Read them aloud.
  4. Swap with someone, and check each other's sentences with a smile.

Talk about it

For the grown-up

Children at this age are learning that writing is spoken thought on paper. Praise the ideas first and the spelling second. In Spanish, questions begin with ¿ and end with ?, and exclamations begin with ¡ and end with !.
