personhood
The status of being a person: someone, not something, who can be known by name, held responsible, owed duties and treated as an end in themselves.
Usefulness and personhood are different things. A tool can be extremely useful without being a person, and a person's worth does not depend on how useful they are.
What counts as a person is a deep question in philosophy, law and theology. This series holds that human beings are persons because they are made in the image of God, and it treats the question of whether any machine could ever be owed that kind of standing as open and serious.
