accountability

Being answerable for what you have done: able to be asked why, to give an honest account, to make amends. Different from liability, which is only about who pays.

Accountability is a relationship between persons. It needs someone who can stand behind an action, answer for it, and put it right, which is why it cannot be handed to a tool.

Liability asks who pays when something goes wrong. Accountability asks who answers: who can be asked why, who can say "I was wrong", make amends, and be forgiven.
