Week 2: Identity · Day 13 of 30
Day 13: Whose voice are you listening to?
Reflect
We are surrounded by voices that tell us who we are. Some are loud: headlines about which jobs are disappearing, forecasts that sound certain, advertisements that promise a better, more productive you. Some are quiet but persistent: an old critic in the back of your own head, a family expectation, a manager's long-ago remark that stuck.
In a season of uncertainty, those voices get louder, and they often agree on one message: you must prove yourself, or you will be left behind. It can start to sound like the truth simply because it is repeated so often.
Jesus offers another picture. He says that his sheep hear his voice, and that he knows them. In an age of constant noise, the image is quiet. A shepherd's voice is not shouting a forecast. It is a familiar sound, and the sheep recognise it. Not because it is the loudest, but because it is known.
A practical question follows: what do you actually listen to in a day? How much of your time goes to voices that make you feel smaller, more anxious or more behind? And how much to voices that remind you who you are?
We cannot switch off every other voice, and we should not try to. Information matters. But we can decide how much weight each one gets. Some voices deserve a hearing and a response. Others deserve a polite no.
Today, listen for the quieter voice. It may come through scripture, through a trusted friend, through silence. It will not push you or shame you. It will sound like being known.
Verse
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
John 10:27 (KJV)
Journal
Which voices have been telling me who I am lately? Which should I give less weight to, and which should I listen to more?
One small action
Choose one source of anxious noise (a feed, a newsletter, a group chat) and limit it today. In the gap, read one short passage of Scripture slowly.
A 60-second breath prayer
Breathe in: “Speak, Lord”
Breathe out: “I am listening for you”
Breathe slowly for about a minute, saying the first line as you breathe in and the second as you breathe out.
