Week 2: Identity · Day 10 of 30

Day 10: Beloved before useful

← All days

Reflect

There is a quiet detail near the start of the story of Jesus that is easy to read past. At his baptism, before he has taught anyone or done a single piece of his public work, a voice says: this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The order is important. The affirmation comes first. The work comes after. Jesus did not earn the Father's delight by his achievements. He began his work from it.

That is a pattern we are invited into. Many of us try to run it the other way round: do enough, achieve enough, prove enough, and perhaps then we will feel acceptable. It makes us tired, and it makes us fragile, because the proof can always be taken away. Work done to earn love never feels finished.

Work done from love is different. It can be done freely. It can fail without being a catastrophe. It can be set down, handed over, or lost, because it was never holding up the weight of your identity in the first place.

We should be careful here not to overclaim. This reflection is not saying that your situation is painless or that practical steps do not matter. It is saying that your standing before God is not on the line when your role is. You can be unemployed, or unsure, or redeployed, or retired, and still be loved to the same extent.

Take a few minutes today to let that settle. You are not being asked to feel it fully. You are being asked to consider that it may be true, and to see what changes if you let it be.

Verse

“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 3:17 (KJV)

Journal

Where in my life have I been working to earn approval? What would change if I started from being accepted instead?

One small action

Do one small, ordinary thing today purely for enjoyment, with no usefulness attached: a cup of tea, a song, ten minutes in the garden. Let it be enough.

A 60-second breath prayer

Breathe in: “I begin from your love”

Breathe out: “not from my effort”

Breathe slowly for about a minute, saying the first line as you breathe in and the second as you breathe out.

A gentle note. This journey is not a substitute for professional or pastoral care. If this feels heavy, please talk to someone you trust. In the US, you can call or text 988 at any time. Outside the US? Find a free, confidential helpline at findahelpline.com.
