Week 2: Identity · Day 9 of 30

Day 9: Called by name

← All days

Reflect

A name is a small, powerful thing. When someone uses ours warmly, we feel seen in a way a job title cannot manage. Titles describe a function. Names describe a person.

In the book of Isaiah, God speaks to a people who have lost almost everything: their homes, their security, their sense of who they are. And what does he say? Not that they should try harder, and not that they should work out a better strategy. He says, fear not, I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name, you are mine.

Look at the three phrases. Redeemed: you have been bought back, rescued, valued at a cost. Called by name: you are known as an individual, not as a category. Mine: you belong. Each one is a statement about identity that comes from outside you, from the one who made you. None depends on your performance.

This is one of the hardest ideas to hold in a culture that keeps asking us to prove our value. We are used to earning belonging. Here it is simply given.

That does not make today easy. You may still feel anxious, and still need to take practical steps. But anxiety about the future is lighter to carry when you are sure of who is holding it. You belong to someone before you belong to any company, profession or industry.

Spend a few minutes today with your own name. Say it slowly. Imagine it spoken with kindness. It is a simple practice, but it can steady you more than you might expect.

Verse

“Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”

Isaiah 43:1 (KJV)

Journal

When have I felt truly known, rather than just useful? What was it about that moment, or that person, that made the difference?

One small action

Write your first name at the top of a page. Underneath, write three words that describe you as a person, not as a worker. Keep the page somewhere you will see it.

A 60-second breath prayer

Breathe in: “You call me by name”

Breathe out: “I belong to you”

Breathe slowly for about a minute, saying the first line as you breathe in and the second as you breathe out.
