Week 1: Grief and honesty · Day 4 of 30

Day 4: Rest before answers

← All days

Reflect

When your work is uncertain, rest can feel like a luxury you have not earned. The usual advice is to be busy: apply, network, retrain, learn the new tools. Some of that will be useful in time. But a mind running on fear and little sleep rarely makes its best decisions.

Jesus said something striking to people who were worn out. He did not say, come to me once you have got yourself together. He said, come to me, all of you who are tired and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. The invitation is addressed to the weary as they are.

Rest here does not have to mean doing nothing for days. It can be small: a proper night's sleep, a meal sitting down, a slow walk, an hour without a screen. It can be a conversation that is not about your situation. It is whatever lets your body and your mind come down a little from alert.

It also means giving yourself a pause from the big decisions. If you can, hold off on choices that are hard to undo until you have had a few calmer days. The answers do not usually arrive in the loudest moments. They tend to become clearer once the noise drops.

You are not being lazy, and you are not falling behind. You are making space for the next steps to be wise rather than frantic. Let today be a little lighter than it feels like it should be. The work will still be there tomorrow, and you will meet it better rested.

Verse

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

Journal

What would real rest look like for me today, in body and in mind? What is one thing I can set down for a few hours?

One small action

Take a twenty-minute walk with no headphones and no news. Notice three things you can see, hear or smell. Come back and write one line about how you feel.

A 60-second breath prayer

Breathe in: “Come, Lord, I am weary”

Breathe out: “give me rest”

Breathe slowly for about a minute, saying the first line as you breathe in and the second as you breathe out.
