Week 1: Grief and honesty · Day 1 of 30
Day 1: Name what happened
Reflect
When something changes suddenly, a job, a plan, a sense of direction, the first reflex is often to move fast: fix it, explain it, get ahead of it. Those things may matter soon. Today we begin somewhere quieter. We begin by saying plainly what has happened.
Perhaps a role has ended. Perhaps your work is being reshaped around a tool you never asked for. Perhaps nothing in particular has been lost, and you can simply feel the ground moving. Whatever your version is, it is real, and it does not need to be argued down or dressed up. Faith does not ask you to pretend. The Psalms are full of people saying exactly what is true, tired, afraid and confused, and saying it to God.
That is the invitation of this first day: pour it out. Not to fix it, not to find the lesson, not to make it sound spiritual. Simply to be honest in the one place where honesty is safe.
A small caution. Naming a loss is not the same as living inside it forever. It is closer to switching on a light in a dark room so you can see where the furniture is. You are not asking the light to move anything. You are only asking it to show you the room.
Over the next thirty days we will move slowly through four seasons: honesty about what has been lost, a fresh look at who you are, a gentle look at what you can offer, and then a few practical steps. You do not have to feel ready. You only have to be willing to take today's small step, and then stop. There is no prize for speed here, and nobody keeping score.
Verse
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
Psalm 62:8 (KJV)
Journal
In plain words, what has happened, or what feels unsettled? Write it as if you were telling a trusted friend who will not interrupt.
One small action
Say it out loud once, to God, in your own words. Then write one sentence beginning: "The hardest part of this is..."
A 60-second breath prayer
Breathe in: “Lord, I am here”
Breathe out: “and you are here”
Breathe slowly for about a minute, saying the first line as you breathe in and the second as you breathe out.
A gentle note. This journey is not a substitute for professional or pastoral care. If this feels heavy, please talk to someone you trust. In the US, you can call or text 988 at any time. Outside the US? Find a free, confidential helpline at findahelpline.com.
