## agency

The ability to make your own choices and act on them, rather than only having things done to you or for you.

## artificial intelligence

Computer systems that do tasks which usually need human thinking, such as recognising speech, sorting images or writing text. Often shortened to AI.

Artificial intelligence is a broad label, not one machine. It covers the tools that suggest the next word as you type, the programs that sort photographs, and the chat assistants that write whole paragraphs.

What they share is that they find patterns in very large amounts of data and use those patterns to produce an answer. They do not share one kind of mind, and none of them is a person.

## automation

Using machines or software to do a task with little human effort each time it is repeated.

## discernment

The patient practice of telling what is wise, true and good from what is only appealing, often with prayer, Scripture and trusted counsel.

In the Christian tradition, discernment is more than having an opinion. It is a habit of slowing down, asking what is true, what is good and what is mine to do, and testing the answer with others.

It matters more, not less, when tools can produce plausible answers instantly. Speed is easy to get. Wisdom still takes time.

## generative AI

AI that makes new content, such as text, images, music or code, in response to a request.

## hallucination

When an AI states something false in a smooth, confident way, such as inventing a quotation or a source that does not exist.

In AI, a hallucination is an answer that sounds right but is not grounded in anything real. It is not a lie, because the system has no intention. It is a by-product of producing likely-sounding language.

The practical habit is simple: when an answer names a fact, a date, a quotation or a source, look it up somewhere you trust before you rely on it.

## large language model

An AI system trained on huge amounts of text to predict and produce language. It can sound confident and fluent without understanding the way a person does.

A large language model is trained by showing it a very large collection of writing, so that it learns which words tend to follow which. When you ask it something, it builds an answer one piece at a time from those patterns.

That is why it can write well and still be wrong. Fluent is not the same as true, so anything that matters should be checked against a reliable source.

## Sabbath

A regular day of rest and worship. It is rooted in Genesis 2 and the Ten Commandments, and Christians keep it in different ways and on different days.

The Sabbath begins in the Bible with God resting after creation, and it becomes a commandment to stop working one day in seven. Jewish practice keeps it from Friday evening to Saturday evening. Many Christians keep Sunday as a day of worship and rest, and some traditions keep Saturday.

Whatever the day, the invitation is to remember that you are more than what you produce.

## stewardship

Caring responsibly for something that has been entrusted to you, such as time, money, creation or a gift, rather than owning it outright.

## vocation

A calling: the particular ways a person is invited to serve God and other people, in work, family, church and community. Traditions describe it differently.

The word comes from the Latin for a call. Some traditions stress that ordinary work and daily duties are themselves a calling. Others also speak of special callings, such as to marriage, to the single life, or to ordained or monastic life.

Either way, the idea is that a life has purpose that does not depend on how much a person produces.
